A downloadable game for Windows, macOS, and Linux

Ness Liu is an amateur game developer who's dreamed of making games of her own ever since she was little—a dream she takes strides toward after meeting the energetic artist Roxie and the reserved musician Blythe. Chronicled herein are the various misadventures of this trio and the impromptu indie game studio they form: Blocky Games!

The current release includes the first two chapters of the story; the total number of chapters the game will ultimately have is still to be determined.

Please note: this game contains strong language.

i've been playing this game for less than 10 minutes and i've already had to pause because i was laughing too hard to look at the screen (the sprite movement when first encountering roxie had me in hysterics. it's the little things.)

(1 edit)

I think a solid 90% of the time I spent playing this game was spent laughing. Extremely funny VN I love the sense of humor on display here. Everyone should play Blocky Games immediately for their health. Thabk you

Have just realized reviews are not public so I'm also pasting it here:

Simultaneously extremely compelling and extremely funny. With just the 2 short chapters that have been released, I've already fallen in love with the cast. Please read hit VN Blocky Games at the earliest convenience.

I am so very in love with the humor in this game, especially the willingness to be a little crass with it. It is so hard to find toilet-and-adjacently-juvenile humor in stuff geared more towards young adult audiences, which is a shame because it really is funny!! Hit VN Blocky Games scratches that itch that I've been plagued by for so long. The visual comedy in this is also really good; big big fan of whenever the sprites do things that a human absolutely could not do in real life, like the floating off the screen and whatnot. In general, the more absurd elements of the VN's world, and the fact that they're usually barely or not at all questioned by the characters is something that I really love.

I'm also loving the speed at which information's being given to us so far; I'm SO invested in whatever went down between Roxie and Blythe, and the sort of drip-feeding of that tension that's been going on has been driving me bonkers in a good and fun way. I'd also love to know more about what the villain's deal is!! What's her problem!!!

The art in this VN is super cute and creative. I love it when drawings in an illustrated work's universe have a different style to how, like, the sprites and stuff are drawn. The character design goes crazy (especially with Roxie I love you Roxie); not only is the main cast really memorable and distinct from each other, but even the background characters have a lot of life in them. The professors' haircuts killed me on impact.

I rate this Really Really Good / 10

Tldr; The game is funny, looks great, and is well written, people should play it.

First and foremost, this game is good because the writing and the art are both fantastic. All of the characters pop immediately both in style and in characterisation, and I think that’s because their character designs and personalities compliment each other really well. The use of sprites also adds to this, with an extroverted character like Roxie having very large exaggerated sprites and Blythe having smaller more reserved ones, allowing their personalities to come through naturally.

The writing is also very good throughout; it’s nice to see a game which is actually funny, and not just attempting to be. Almost all the jokes landed for me, and there were so many that meant I pretty much always had a smile on my face when playing. Plus the story was compelling and engaging.

Also, big fucking shoutout to swearing! It’s great to see characters actually swear in a game, I’m sick of characters just not for reasons, and it was refreshing to see that here.

The absurdist tone of the piece also lands really well, with it being established early and regularly pushed to the limits. Absurdity is hard to pull off while also taking the world somewhat seriously, but by focussing on personal issues about game development it allows the story to he serious enough to be engaging while also being silly. The art style matches this tone very well too, plus it’s just really nice to look at.

Another thing that I really enjoyed about this game are all the little details that show how much was put into it, with touches like ‘Daisy’ playing in he background when LOIS is introduced, or an old phone cable splitting the screen between two characters on a phone call. Touches like these make the game, and there will be loads I missed, so clearly a lot of thought has gone into it, and it pays off.

This game also plays with the medium of visual novels in ways that you don’t always see outside of horror games. The use of moving sprites is great, and adds some movement that is often sorely lacking in (often poorly named) kinetic Visual Novels. The use of choices (or lack of) is nice to see and are used to good comedic effect. It’s making a good use of the medium, and I’m interested to see in what other little ways it’s used in the future.

If I had any criticism it’s that the game is too short. The people (ie, me) demand MORE (but there’s no need to hurry, take you’re time). This is a really promising start and I’m excited to see where it goes.

AAH THANK YOU SO MUCH!! this really means a ton!!!

I hope they borrow talents of a weirdo ponytail haired gal in the next release to help with coder duties.

It's a cartoon game I had fun playing it!

I don't think I spent a single minute of this not smiling to myself. I'm thrilled to see where it may end up going, and I adore what's already here.

that was fucking hilarious. i loved it. the way things just kept growing more and more absurd, how Ness and Blythe are kinda the straight men--no, that's. not the right word. i mean in the comedy sense--even though the world they exist in is just as bizarre as Roxie is. The characters are really likeable and cute, and the sense of humor is peak. looking forward to more!

nice

Excuse me. I have a question. Do you have any plans of making a mobile release?

Yes, I'm hoping to eventually make an Android version! No plans for iOS though

Will you need any help?

Like not a lot of people know how to use Layered Images. It's kinda like using layers in Photoshop. (Also I absolutely love your artwork! The sprites are adorable)

(and I am sure that your game will work on Android you get a jdk installed)

This game is super cute! The sprites and the animations are super charming and give this game a lot of character. It really suits the absurdist writing of the game. I love the way the sprites move around to make it feel like you're in a physical scene. (I also love the phone cord to separate two characters on a call)

Thank you so much!!!! 🥹
